Spyware/Adware:
Spyware is Internet jargon for any data collection program that secretly gathers information about you and relays it to
advertisers and other interested parties. Adware usually displays banners or unwanted pop-up windows. In many
cases, such unwanted programs do both functions.
You can unknowingly install spyware when you install new software, most commonly freeware or shareware P2P
(peer-to-peer) file-sharing programs. Many of these programs are intended to track your Internet browsing habits, such
as frequented sites and favorite downloads, and then provide advertising companies with marketing data.
Some spyware programs can adversely affect your computer's performance, and may prevent you from accessing
secure services at Indiana University, including Oncourse CL, IU Webmail, CAS, and OneStart.
Anti-spamming solutions:
The term "spam" is Internet slang that refers to unsolicited commercial email (UCE) or unsolicited bulk email (UBE).
Some people refer to this kind of communication as junk email to equate it with the paper junk mail that comes
through the US Mail. Unsolicited email most often contains advertisements for services or products, but very few
reputable marketers use UCE to advertise. The most commonly seen spam includes the following:
Phishing scams, a very popular and dangerous form of email fraud
Foreign bank scams or advance fee fraud schemes
Pyramid schemes, including multilevel marketing (MLM)<
Other "Get Rich Quick" or "Make Money Fast" (MMF) schemes
Quack health products and remedies
Ads for pornographic web sites
Offers of software for collecting email addresses and sending UCE
Offers of bulk emailing services for sending UCE
Chain letters (for more information, see About chain mail)
Illegally pirated software ("Warez")
Anti-virus solutions
A computer virus, according to Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, is "a computer program usually hidden within another
seemingly innocuous program that produces copies of itself and inserts them into other programs or files, and that
usually performs a malicious action (such as destroying data)". Two categories of viruses, macro viruses and worms,
are especially common today. Computer viruses are never naturally occurring; they are always man-made. Once
created and released, however, their spread is not directly under human control.
